Description
Fibroblast growth factor 3 is a member of the fibroblast growth factor (FGF) family. FGF family members possess broad mitogenic and cell survival activities, and are involved in a variety of biological processes, including embryonic development, cell growth, morphogenesis, tissue repair, tumor growth and invasion.
FGF-3 has been implicated in the induction of inner ear development. Studies have suggested that FGF-3 functions synergistically in otic placode induction and during neuronal development to regulate dorsoventral axis formation. During development, the activities of FGF-3 is regulated negatively by the sprouty family proteins and by Sef (similar expression to fgf genes), a transmebrane protein that shares intracellular sequence similarities with the IL-17 receptor.
