The interferons (IFN)s are a family of cytokines with potent antiviral, antitumor, and immunomodulatory properties. Interferons are increasingly used clinically to treat a range of malignancies, myelodysplasias and autoimmune diseases. Interferons are divided into type I, II, and III. Type I IFNs (IFN-α and IFN-β) are most abundant in number, distribution, and expression.
IFN-α5 (interferon α 5), also known as IFN-αG, belongs to type 1 interferon family. Natural human IFN-α5 is induced in peripheral blood mononuclear cells upon incubation with CpG-oligonucleotides and in plasmacytoid dendritic cells upon incubation with CpG-oligonucleotides or imiquimod. IFN-α5 is the sole IFN-α subtype that is expressed in the human liver under normal conditions.
