Kanamycin Sulfate solution is an aminoglycoside antibiotic consisting of a six-membered aminocyclitol ring attached to aminosugar side chains through glycosidic bonds. Kanamycin Sulfate solution acts by inhibiting protein synthesis, and compromising translational fidelity in susceptible bacteria.

Kanamycin Sulfate solution is an aminoglycoside antibiotic consisting of a six-membered aminocyclitol ring attached to aminosugar side chains through glycosidic bonds. Kanamycin Sulfate solution acts by inhibiting protein synthesis, and compromising translational fidelity in susceptible bacteria. Active against most strains of gram-negative bacteria, many strains of gram-positive bacteria and some strains of Mycobacterium. Often used as a transgenic marker in plants. Most active in alkaline solution.
Applications
- Aminoglycoside-antibiotic with broad antibacterial spectrum, (including mycobacteria, many gram-positive and most gram-negative organisms)
- Additive in culture media for the isolation of group D streptococci on Kanamycin Esculin Azide Agar (Mossel et al.)
- Selection of transformed plant cells containing the neomycin phosphotransferase (for kanamycin resistance); on a kanamycin-medium.
