Activated Charcoal

Description:

Activated charcoal is a laboratory-grade carbon designed for use in plant tissue culture media. Its main function is to enhance cell growth and development by adsorbing inhibitors and toxic substances from the culture medium. Adding activated charcoal to liquid or semi-solid media helps reduce phenolic oxidation (browning), prevents the accumulation of inhibitory exudates, and stabilizes the pH of the environment.

Activated charcoal also creates a darker environment that mimics natural conditions, promoting spontaneous morphogenesis of explants and overall improving the success rate of in vitro cultures. It is used in all stages of micropropagation, especially where the presence of growth inhibitors from autoclaving or natural plant metabolism must be minimized.

It is added to the culture medium according to recommendations (typically 0.5–3 g/l) before autoclaving. Suitable for a wide range of plant species and experimental in vitro culture applications.
